Amy Lewis knows all about having a strong mother/daughter bond. She’s spent nearly six months in the cardiac intensive care unit at Children’s fighting alongside her baby, Brynn, who was born with multiple serious heart defects.
When I talked to Amy today, I could hear the exhaustion in her voice as she described the tense moments of keeping Brynn calm because an increased heart rate could be life threatening. The days spent staring at her baby and praying for a new heart to become available. She didn’t know if Brynn would make it to the next Mother’s Day so she planned to cherish every moment of this one.
On Sunday, while Amy encouraged Brynn to keep fighting, another mom said goodbye to her baby and gave Amy the best Mother’s Day gift of all – a new heart for Brynn. Drs. Joseph Forbess and Kristine Guleserian took the tiny heart and placed it in Brynn’s chest.
Today, only two days after her transplant, Brynn’s breathing tube will be removed and afterward, Amy will be right by her side to calm her down – this time feeling her new heartbeat.
“I like to think that Brynn and God got together and said, ‘Mom’s had it hard so let’s give her something special on Mother’s Day,”‘ Amy said.
