Sure-fire ways to stay safe this July 4th

This 4th of July, most of us will marvel at a fireworks display or two. But, before you pack up the Mom-mobile with picnic blankets, coolers and sparklers, make sure everyone knows the rules of fireworks safety.

Leave fireworks to the professionals

Firework Safety

Learn to stay safe and still have fun this Independence Day.

All fireworks  — even the legal consumer ones that comply with the Consumer Product Safety Commission regulations — are classified as hazardous substances under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act because they can cause injury, especially when used improperly.

Some fireworks, such as illegal firecracker-type devices (M-80′s, quarter sticks) and professional display fireworks, should never be used or handled by consumers or children because of the risk of serious injuries and death.

The best way to avoid injury from fireworks is to leave them to the professionals, and there are lots of great public fireworks displays all over the Metroplex this Independence Day.

Safety tips

If you do plan to buy your own fireworks, follow these tips and stay safe:

  • Buy only legal fireworks from reliable sellers. Legal fireworks will have a safety label. Always read the label and follow the instructions carefully.
  • Use fireworks outdoors only.
  • Always have water handy (a garden hose and a bucket).
  • Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers. And avoid bottle rockets, because their flight paths are unpredictable and the launchers often explode.
  • Light only one firework at a time.
  • Never re-light a “dud” firework (wait 15 to 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water)
  • Never give fireworks to small children.
  • Never throw or point fireworks at other people.
  • Never carry fireworks in your pocket.
  • Make sure people are out of range before lighting fireworks.
  • Dispose of fireworks properly by soaking them in water and then putting them in a trash can.
