Newborn with Spina Bifida Undergoes Multiple Surgeries

You may remember Dakayta Givens from Children’s Med Dallas. She was born with spina bifida – a defect of the spinal cord, and she was at a significant risk for infection which could turn fatal. We followed her from the beginning when she was only a couple of hours old.

At 2 days old, Dakayta underwent surgery to close the opening with neurosurgeon Dr. Dale Swift. She went to the operating room with neurosurgeon Dr. David Sacco for a second surgery at a couple of weeks old to implant a shunt which drains fluid from her brain to the abdomen where it is reabsorbed into the bloodstream. Watch her story and see her at home now.
