Diagnosed at age 3 with stage IV rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive soft tissue cancer, Sydney has battled medical issues for as long as she can remember. A 54-week treatment plan included surgery, radiation and chemotherapy in the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s. She emerged from that regimen with little to no quadriceps muscle on her left leg.
While at a friend’s house in April, she broke the leg and wound up temporarily relying on a little pink walker, which she is using to navigate her way around Capitol Hill this week.
The Dallas-area patient and her mother, Erin Mayrell, is in Washington D.C. attending Speak Now For Kids Family Advocacy Day 2013, hosted by the Children’s Hospital Association. Sydney is one of 36 patients from children’s hospitals nationwide to press legislators to support children’s health programs.
Sydney is attending meetings with Texas Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, along with a number of Texas Congressional leaders today.
