Young Cancer Survivor Lobbies at Capitol Hill

SydneyThe look of determination on Sydney Mayrell’s face rivals that of most first-graders.

Diagnosed at age 3 with stage IV rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive soft tissue cancer, Sydney has battled medical issues for as long as she can remember.  A 54-week treatment plan included surgery, radiation and chemotherapy in the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s. She emerged from that regimen with little to no quadriceps muscle on her left leg.

While at a friend’s house in April, she broke the leg and wound up temporarily relying on a little pink walker, which she is using to navigate her way around Capitol Hill this week.

The Dallas-area patient and her mother, Erin Mayrell, is in Washington D.C. attending Speak Now For Kids Family Advocacy Day 2013, hosted by the Children’s Hospital Association. Sydney is one of 36 patients from children’s hospitals nationwide to press legislators to support children’s health programs.

Sydney is attending meetings with Texas Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, along with a number of Texas Congressional leaders today.

Little lives like this is why we as parents, caretakers, providers and protectors of other children that have been, by no good alternative choice, made to specialize in being strong in order to fight a battle for survival at too young of an age, find our strength and courage to at least move forward and stand on the front lines to shelter them in their struggle when we can, bearing up, when we might have given up. If we won’t advocate for the children entrusted to all of us, as decent human beings, to care about, who will? Be encouraged little Sydney and mom. This is your Olympic winter and you’re looking well into winning. Your voice will count on the hill whenever I’m present to stand in as a voice for the rights and protections of the most vulnerable, which are the Children of This World!
